Hvar is the sunniest island in the country, but that's not the argument. The argument is the interior — inland lavender fields, seventeenth-century stone houses in Stari Grad and Vrboska — and the fact that you can be at anchor off the uninhabited island of Šćedro twenty minutes later, feeling like it's another century.

Hvar by boat
Hvar is the natural base for a sailboat wedding. The Pakleni Islands are ten minutes west, Vis is two hours south, Brač is an hour north. Everything you want to sail to is one lunch away.

Why Hvar specifically?
Because it holds two islands at once: a lavender-covered interior of old stone villages, and a Mediterranean party town on the south coast. You can hide from one in the other. And the Pakleni Islands, a chain of small coves just off Hvar Town, are one of the best sailing corners in the country.
When is the best time?
Late May to mid-June and September. High summer works on the north side of the island — Stari Grad, Vrboska — but Hvar Town itself is busy in July and August.
How do guests get here?
Fly to Split, then take the ferry or a fast catamaran to Hvar. Total travel time from most European cities is roughly the same as flying to a Greek island — half a day, comfortably.
